Understanding and adhering to UAE labor laws is critical for businesses operating in the region. This comprehensive guide breaks down the essential compliance requirements that every employer must know.

Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation (MOHRE) Regulations

MOHRE oversees all employment-related matters in the UAE. Key compliance areas include employment contract registration, work permit processing, and adherence to standardized employment terms. All contracts must be registered within 14 days of employee commencement.

Wage Protection System (WPS)

The WPS is a mandatory electronic salary transfer system that ensures timely and full payment of wages. Employers must register with an authorized WPS agent and transfer salaries through approved channels. Non-compliance can result in work permit suspensions and penalties.

Working Hours and Overtime Regulations

Standard working hours are 8 hours per day or 48 hours per week. During Ramadan, working hours are reduced to 6 hours per day for Muslim employees. Overtime must be compensated at 125% of the regular hourly rate, or 150% for work between 9 PM and 4 AM.

"Compliance is not just about avoiding penalties—it's about building a sustainable, ethical workforce foundation that drives long-term business success."

Leave Entitlements and Benefits

Employees are entitled to 30 days of annual leave after one year of service, 90 days of sick leave (with varying pay conditions), and maternity leave of 60 days (45 days full pay, 15 days half pay). Public holidays are also mandated by law.

End of Service Benefits

Gratuity payments are calculated based on length of service: 21 days' basic salary for each year of the first five years, and 30 days' salary for each subsequent year. Employees who resign before completing one year are not entitled to gratuity.

Staying Compliant

Partnering with experienced manpower solutions providers ensures continuous compliance monitoring, regulatory updates, and proactive risk mitigation. This allows businesses to focus on core operations while maintaining full legal adherence.
